Palate: Tiny hint of caramel, peaches, pink peppercorn
Rating: 5 / 10 – simple and lovely but nothing extraordinary
Nose: Ovaltine, carob, graham crackers.
Palate: Heather, mexican hot chocolate – paprika and clove, hint of campfire smoke
Rating: 7 / 10 – this is delicious and smooth for the abv
Nose: Red velvet cake, plums, cloves.
Palate: Sulfur, very astringent and tannic, black tea, plum.
Rating: 2 / 10 – ouch
Nose: Pear, sweet green grapes, lemon tart, bright
Palate: Hint of smokiness, warm hug, sawdust, touch of cinnimint
Rating: 7 / 10 – yum, yum, yum
Nose: Golden raisins, grape must, quite sweet, large wet hay bundles after sitting under a tarp all winter, hazelnut, bark mulch.
Palate: Sulfur… and whatever ryan writes. I’m out. Dry on the finish, just not as much as in batch 2. Marsala, endive, oak.
Rating: Shane (2) Ryan (4) / 10 – well that was a disappointment. I’m sure it’s lovely for those of your who are immune to the devils taint, but mercy me. No thanks.
Nose: Raisins, dates, apricots and peaches, potting soil, champagne vinegar, hot tarmac, starting to resemble the classic profile.
Palate: Sulfur again, shane taps out. scotch tape, bit more of that classic Springbank profile here unlike in previous batches. Menthol, white pepper.
Rating: Shane (3) Ryan (5) / 10 – The first batch of 12 year cask strength that seemingly starts to embody that core Springbank DNA.
Nose: Hazelnut, musk, dijon cracked black pepper steak leftovers in a pan, dark fruit of the fig persuasion?
Palate: Young and hot and rough sherry.
Rating: 3 / 10 – bugh…
Nose: Buttery, vanilla, white tea.
Palate: Cabinet spices, redvines, rooibos, orange peel, slightly sour bourbon cask note.
Rating: 5 / 10
Nose: Sour note, slightly nutty, sugar.
Palate: Strong, but good wood, touch of sweetness which nicely negates some of the wood, big sip, dates, prunes, cane honey, subtle molasses, black pepper
Rating: 5 / 10 – fine but oddly non descript
Nose: Sugar cream frosting, maple syrup, cedar, pan seared sweet plantains.
Palate: You get the sweetness at the front, some lemongrass, brussel sprouts cooked in maple syrup, really toned down for SB dna, and finish goes a bit more of that sour/astringent bourbon barrel realm
Rating: 6 / 10
Nose: Salt marshes, olive oil lemon cake, smoked sea salt, creamy.
Palate: Oh yummy, stone fruit, unripe yellow peach, has that quintessential SB bandaid vibe but really nicely integrated here, tarmac, gouda, licking envelopes, olive brine, green peppercorn
Rating: 7 / 10 – this has been one of the better and more enjoyable of this series, very nice
Nose: Kettle corn, peanut brittle, salted caramel taffy, roasted red bellpeppers reminding me of a sweet tomato pepper chutney, slight leather
Palate: Leather, pipe tobacco, affogato, mesquite, hard caramel with a bitter twist.
Rating: 7 / 10 – beautiful earthy sweat smokey flavors.
Nose: Grapefruit, rum cake.
Palate: Black tea, cardamom, grapefruit peel, puer tea.
Rating: 7 / 10 – much much better. Longrow really works with a lick of sweetness.
Nose: Seagrass, like walking in the tidal fields at mont saint michel. Ripe honeydew melon. Unripe dates. Touch of bandaid. Tangerine marmalade on burnt toast. Quite fruity for a springbank. Sweet chilaquiles with a sprinkling of cotija.
Palate: That is a lot of sherry influence with a dry dry finish. Tamarind. Which is the world’s nastiest … nut? Fruit? Not even sure what it is. Fermented melon, once it’s gone over ripe. Peppery, somewhere between rocket and endives.
Rating: 4 / 10 – this is the worst springbank 12 cs I’ve had.
Nose: Freeze dried mango with granola, dollop of greek yogurt, cotton candy floss, julie and ryan’s magnesium supplements, changing room at the rehab swim center. Anise.
Palate: White peach, light citrus tea, licking stamps, scotch tape, white pepper, touch of minerals
Rating: Shane (6) ryan (5) / 10 – starting to conclude that I need a bit of the bourbon influence before I can get stoked on the sb12s. This is a nice core line expression.
