Lheraud Petite Champagne 1995 Cask Sample #16

Nose: Blackberries and milk chocolate. Rich but with a pop of character.

Palate: Definitely blackberries, touch of spicy peppers, pink peppercorn simple syrup, and star of anise, it’s a hint hot, but that just gives the spirit character, cilantro, coffee G&T, lime peel.

Rating: 6 / 10 – very very concentrated and delicious. I love the berries and coffee / chocolate combo. Was expecting rancio but not finding much. I wonder if the heat is an issue.

Lheraud Petite Champagne 2011 Cask Sample #? @ 44%

Nose: Sauternes, limestone, crisp salmon skin, wheat grass.

Palate: Amazing gentle sweetness, agave nectar, honey dew melon juice, roasted almonds, browned butter. The earthiness of cascara tea without any tannins. almost reminds me of a late harvest wine the way it lands. It’s incredibly simple, but what a beautiful note.

Rating: 7 / 10 – it’s so strange how the nose and palate differ yet align. The nose has funk I notice but doesn’t overwhelm on the palate like the 2002. The sip is lovely. Just lovely. And for a good price this is an easy sipper any day but I might not pay a Lheraud premium for it. It lacks complexity, but It’s what I would give non drinkers in a tiny shot after a large meal any day in place of the traditional honey rum served here in the canaries.

Nose: Apple shrub, licorice root, with the slightest hint of dried apricots in the empty glass

Palate: Rootbeer, chewing on licorice root, a touch of wintergreen.

Rating: 6 / 10 – this is quite nice, but bring back the fruit.

Lheraud Petite Champagne 1990 Cask Sample #19

Nose: An elegant funk jazz piano solo. Forest strawberries, cranberry relish. Medjool dates

Palate: Strawberry and black pepper syrup, a beautiful strong layer of oak that is the showpiece but doesn’t overwhelm. This is definitely yum

Rating: 8 / 10 – these are so absurdly good. Elegant on the nose and powerful on the palate. It’s like drinking 1993 glendronachs for me. Fruit sherry notes and oak. Less fruity than the traditional cognac drinker would probably prefer and just oaky enough to make the armagnac and americans swoon.

Lheraud Petite Champagne 1972 Cask Sample #9

Nose: Tangerine, crisp yellow peaches, fresh cantaloupe, jasmine, on an empty glass something earthier emerges, cooked butternut squash and old spice cologne

Palate: Wow on the palate – a tropical fruit explosion with a strong underlayer of old spice. Seriously wow. Yellow peach compote drizzled over vanilla icecream, cloves and nutmeg, cardamom

Rating: 7 / 10 – this is exceptionally potent. A bit rougher than some Lheraud, but with a burst of energy that I find captivating. This is an old armagnac drinkers cognac. Higher ABV?

Grosperrin Petite Champagne 1929 / 1947 / 1870 pr-phy (officially 40%) 37.8%

Nose: Grape cotton candy puffs. Oh boy, I don’t love more floral notes personally, but those present here are really lovely, violets, rose hips, honey blossom, orange blossom water, classic king cake, wet oats, packing tape, wintergreen berries, mountain blueberries, dusting of cinnamon, butter poached apples

Palate: Blueberry white tea, agave syrup, lemon peel aged in white spirit, mirabel, white raisins, juniper on the long finish, gentle and delicate, wood integration is also great here given the softness of the spirit–present but not overpowering, tingling on the mouth in the finish with little flavor. Passionfruit.

Rating: 6 / 10 – a playful and elegant slice of history
