Nose: Lemon peel, pepper, pine resin, spice box, baby bell with the wax, violets
Palate: Banana saltwater taffy, touch of caramel, overripe cantaloupe, manchego, lemon verbena tea, band-aids
Rating: 5 / 10 – a perfectly pleasant young laddie, but the slightly pine vibe isn’t bad but is an unusual note.
Nose: Brittle without the peanuts, that intense pine note is still quite present, egg salad, raw cedar, nice touch of the rivesaltes.
Palate: Big wood, dried cranberries, white isn’t not necessarily rubber sulfury, I flinched. Veers more vegetal towards the finish.
Rating: 3 (Shane) 4 (Ryan) / 10 – kinda gave me whiplash. ouch.
Nose: Smoked ham and cheese hot pockets, smoked caviar, meringue, wood smoked eggplant, fresh chopped chives.
Palate: Roasted peppers (bell & poblano), okra, browned butter, pan roasted spam, braggs amino acids. grilled and smoked head of lettuce with crisped anchovies. Freeze dried strawberries and a drizzle of sweet cream with sea salt
Rating: 6 (Ryan) 7 (Shane) / 10 – OH YUM YUM. This is great.
Nose: Prosciutto wrapped around cantaloupe, cedar chips, cotton candy, rose hips, orange peel, the tiniest brush of cloves, almost cola vibe
Palate: Bunch of peat well integrated with the other flavors, surprising for an older cask. The combo of barrels does wonders here. Very blackberry/raspberry, licorice. Wool socks. [Ryan]: Damn, I don’t tend to love the more heavily smoked, peaty side of the spectrum these days, but this is delicious.
Rating: 6 / 10 – when compared to the pure bourbon sister cask, it comes short, but on its own, a very nice pour.
Nose: Sugar cookies, poached pears, licorice stick, wintergreen life savers – the one they gave you in space camp to chew under the stars and so them spark, oily, packing tape, burnt brown sugar, fresh made caesar salad dressing.
Palate: Wood 2×6 to the face, smoked honey, biltong, deep brooding fresh cinnamon, yummy.
Rating: 5 (Ryan) 7 (Shane) / 10 – Rich smokey BBQ awesomeness.
Nose: Yummm, more elegant and well rounded nose than its previous sister cask. Fruity, plums, apricots. Banana boat sunscreen, clarified butter, pretty sweet.
Palate: Big raisin love, super ripe purple plums, banana leaf wrapped pork tamales in campfire
Rating: 7 / 10 – sweet smokey fruity deliciousness
Nose: Barnyard funk, touch of sulfur, hints of prime rib, sweet treats, lot of delightful things here dancing around on the nose. Maple candies. Frosting.
Palate: Chocolate, leather, heather, smoke, vanilla salt water taffy, salted cod.

Nose: Plain milk chocolate m&m’s, snack pack chocolate pudding cups, stale vanilla wafers you pick up at the costa rican gas station on the way to a company meeting… nearly a tradition. Graham crackers / circus animals, werther’s originals, tangerine flan with a well balanced layer of smoke.
Palate: Tangerine cut in half and plopped on the grill with a sprig of rosemary. Grapefruit peel. Wildflower honey. Sour grass.
Rating: 5 (Ryan) 7 (Shane) / 10 – a fun mix but surprised too
Nose: During my full day bike ride in Belgium last weekend we ended up talking about making a craft cola. I’m thinking of starting with rose hips, orange peel, the tiniest brush of cloves. And something to bring a sense of aged wood but not sure how to approach it. We didn’t discussed a smoky cola, but I kinda want to give it a shot. Layer in a solid peat smoke and a maritime vibe. It is a solid nose but every time I’ve stepped away from the glass and come back, the first sniff isn’t filling me with joy. Maybe it is the wool socks vibe.
Palate: Salty first then sweet. Blackberries and cassis. Licorice root. A faded meaty note, sweet glazed beef jerky. Oh and it is not wool socks, although that does fit. It is the fine edge of the sulfur spectrum. Not terribly dominant, nor particularly unpleasant, but enough that it won’t outshine the bourbon for me. Even then, this is still a pretty interesting whisky.
Rating: 5 / 10 – When I tried the straight bourbon, I loved it and also wished it had some kind of funky note. Mission accomplished, it’s funky. But I don’t think it actually elevated the pour. Went back to the straight bourbon cask and it’s still awesome.
Nose: Camping should smell this good. A gentle haze of smoke from a sage brush and old oak fire from a few miles upwind. My parents used to drive us from Los Angeles, through Death Valley and up into the mountains where we would camp by a river. This was back in the days before you had to stay in an assigned spot. It was usually searing hot and we’d spend days building dams, fishing and drifting in the water. I can still smell the hot stones on sandy soil. Roasted trout with sea salt. Wild flower honey.
Palate: Holy shitballs, that is delicious. We had dinner with business partners last night and my favorite dish, which everyone else hated, was a grilled and smoked head of lettuce with candied strawberries, tiny crisped anchovies and a drizzle of sweet cream. The sweet, the salt and the creaminess pair sublimely. Salted toffee. While the peat is the star, and the under study, I like the granny smith apple peel vibe.
Rating: 7 / 10 – As Port Charlotte gets older, I keep expecting the peat to mellow, but it just seems to integrate better over time. I love the way it dances with the bourbon sweetness. I do wish it had an extra note or character to bring deeper complexity, as in some ways for my palate, it is almost too pretty. I know, it’s weird complaining because the pour has nailed a perfect note. I can’t wait to try its sister cask.
Nose: We took the kids for breakfast yesterday to Lava y Salt, a new bakery that makes epic light scones. Instead of whipped cream, she paired them with a bowl of mascarpone frosting. Both sweet and yet slightly funky. A tiny dash of sea salt. More body than cream and a definite step up for me. Kids were nonplussed. My daughter ordered golden milk, a daring adventure into the unknown, which turned out pretty delish and not at all what we expected. Ginger and cinnamon, honey, a dash of coconut and a fair bit of turmeric. More earthy than spiced chai. Thankfully this wasn’t as hippy as it sounds, so no incense, but that would basically cap this nose off perfectly.
Palate: Incredibly salty, which works for me given my heavy hand in the kitchen and years as a surfer, but you have to be into that and it’s a lot. Coriander and cardamom. Lime leaf and green plantains. The bitterness of green bell pepper. And a medicinal peat vibe, which feels unusual as I typically think of Lochindaal closer to the bbq smoke than classic Islay style of other brands. A palate of the sea and the soil.
Rating: 6 / 10 – I think what I love most about Lochindaal is how consistent they are. If you like one, you will like them all. It makes reviewing them a touch dull at times, but given how much joy they bring, screw it, it’s a delight! Drink it and have a nice day. But, given its my prerogative to be a touch picky, this isn’t hitting quite all the right notes for me at the moment. I find myself focused on the unusual bitterness. One of my last favorites bottles to date, which isn’t saying much as you can see from the score and is still excellent. Splitting hairs.
