Last Ward 16 YO 2007 60%
Nose: Sandalwood, plastic, cinnamon buns, pool water, lavender, begonias.
Palate: Anise powerhouse, plastic, lavender, honeydew melon.
Rating: 5 / 10 – reminds me of a very floral st james. Interesting but not my jam.
Nose: Prunes, overripe plums, star of anise, cabinet spices, oak, and in the shadows something fresh and floral. jasmine?
Palate: Too tannic, oversteeped black tea, going to pass rather than dissect it. Moving fast tonight.
Rating: 5 / 10 – not my jam. Revisited a few weeks later and stand by my score. Fine but not special.
Nose: Pickling spices, slightly turned tropical fruit, toasted coconut, pan fried banana
Palate: A muddled gentle generic rum punch. A bit astringent on the finish. An ephemeral sweetness without any striking notes.
Rating: 5 / 10 – frankly kind of disappointing. Fine but nothing special. I did get a chance to try the full proof version at whisky live Paris later and its night and day.
Nose: Tropical butter, toasted almonds, warming wood, star of anise.
Palate: Cinnamon, wood, green bellpepper, szechuan pepper, pencil lead, shellfish – mussels in white wine.
Rating: 5 / 10 – two years later and my bottle is still at 70%. Nuf said.
Nose: I’ve been doing cleanup post demolition – everything smells like sawdust. And green peppercorn steak sauce. There is a spicy richness that just carries on. And a hint of musky, dried Turkish apricots.
Palate: The mouthfeel from the plant de graisse grape is something so utterly unctuous, I’m just shocked we don’t see it used in more blends to give it weight. It just coats. The oak pops but isn’t overwhelming, more piquant, and shows as white pepper.
Rating: 5 / 10 – There is really nothing special here besides the mouthfeel. It needs more depth.
Nose: Fruit bomb. Ripe cantaloupe melon, tons of honey, green olives stuffed with lemon pulp, fresh cut green wood and alfalfa, a young spirit ethanal note. A quite lovely nose.
Palate: A very dry citrus note, lemon blossom honey in white tea, Astringency is the connecting note, which makes it a hint hard to love, on the finish there is a yeasty note. This definitely benefits from a bigger mouthful.
Rating: 5 (Shane) 4 (Ryan) / 10 – I can’t tell if this is simply young and that is the astringent ethanol note, or if it’s the effect of the manzanilla. Super promising, I love parts of it, Ryan is less impressed.
Nose: Overripe figs, dirty old bandaid, super sweet dark grapes, fig newton, welch’s grape jam on rye, musty
Palate: Jolly rancher grape candy, and then ouch ouch ouch. Sour woody yuck. Sucking on aspirin. I know I should write more but I ain’t got it in me.
Rating: 5 (Ryan) 4 (Shane) / 10 – the first two thirds of the sip is great but then that finish… so close but nope.
Nose: Champagne/sherry vinegar, grapefruit, organic Cheerios.
Palate: Mignonette vinegar. Sweet n sour. Stale stick of Juicy fruit gum. Peach gummy rings, packing tape and cardboard.
Rating: 5 / 10 – the most acceptable of the three sister casks, but I’m not looking to lick my way through a major shipping service.
Nose: Butterscotch cream frosting, oats, honestly smells like a wort, browned butter, pot de creme, banana
Palate: Hay, buttered popcorn, banana marshmallows, warming spices, cinnamon latte.on the finish something slightly unpleasant. Envelope glue and wet cardboard.
Rating: 4 (Ryan) 5 (Shane) / 10 – it’s pretty solid until the finish… then I wish it would just finish
Nose: White peach tea, salty and floral, marsh grass in a warm wind, sourdough starter, warm suede or my leather wallet after sitting on it all day, hay bales, pencil shavings
Palate: Simple, gentle notes of vanilla with kisses of citrus, smoked salt, slightly medicinal or aspirin astringency, peppery, surprisingly peated, envelope, the finish blossoms with honey and white fruit.
Rating: 5 / 10 – a lovely light summer dram
Nose: Salted butter, anise seeds, allspice, white pepper, butter cookies, summer marsh grass
Palate: Copper penny, carmel.
Rating: 5 / 10 – a nice nose, and gentle palate
Nose: Christmas fruitcake. Which for whatever reason I haven’t dove into yet this year. I love those things, and need to get my act together. Nutmeg and cloves. Date nuggets. Noooo .. raisin nut bran. Those little nut covered raisins had such a distinctive profile. And while I like all the notes, the smell feels forced. Which is a bit unusual for Dunsville for me. There is a notable young base smell.
Palate: Yeaaah… the nose called it. Burney on the approach. A fun bran vibe. Good rich fruit notes – unripe figs, medjool dates. Brings me to Turkish sweets which isn’t necessarily a PC but more PX note? A bigger sip rounds it out. I’d write more but Julie calls. There is a bitter underlayer, somewhat abrasive, that fights with the sweetness.
Rating: 5 / 10 – a fine pour, but was expecting more. Maybe I’ll try again another night with more time
